Chapter 11

“What do you mean, he’s already dead? How do you know?” She pauses before asking a final question. “Who’s Jarad?”

“I did some research the past few days, and before the murders started here, similar murders happened in Eahmore. A few hours south of us. Violent and gruesome murders that were never solved, just like the ones that have been happening here.”

“What does that have to do with us? And Jarad?”

“Jarad was one of the victims.”

She falls silent, and I pull her through the door at the end of the hallway.

No one else is here. Besides the small well of water in the center of the room surrounded by red brick blocks, it’s empty.

I step closer, looking into the glistening water. It has to be shallow. But no matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to see the bottom.

“Whoever is contacting you must be impersonating Jarad. How long have you two been in contact with him?”

“Uhm, I think it’s been about 2 or 3 days. He told us to come meet him here and when we got here, we didn’t hear from him. We figured he lost service in here.”

“So Ariy went in to search for him? Alone?”

She nods. “If we find the person behind the texts, that must be the killer, then, right?”

I ignore her question, and pace the room, trying to figure out where to go. But there’s nothing here besides the pool of water.

“You’ve never been here before, have you?”

I shake my head.

Fasmoh steps up to the edge of the pool and looks through it.

“It’s a reflecting pool. We watch the reflections. Sometimes the reflections show something different that isn’t here. When you see something that you think is what you’re looking for, that’s when you go. But if you take too long and it passes, then you miss your chance. You have to wait for it to come back.”

She sees the confusion and worry on my face. “It’s like one of those mirror mazes, but more difficult and frustrating.”

“And people enjoy this?”

We stand around the pool, watching the still waters. For several seconds, all I see are our faces.

“Look!”

Something is in the water, above Fasmoh’s head. It looks like a crack forming on the wall. It spreads along the entire wall.

When we turn, there’s nothing there.

“Ready?”

The surface of it doesn’t feel wet. Instead, it feels… soft. As I press down, it cushions my entire arm. Then the rest of my body.

I’m falling head first. Away from the surface.

I reach to grab at the room, but it drifts further and further away.

Soon it’s gone. I turn, seeing bright blue waters all around us. I reach my hand to touch one of the fish, but the water avoids my body and the fish splits in two, swimming on either side of my arm.

I continue to fall through the water, closing my eyes and deepening my breaths. I could fall asleep.

Air brushes the top of my head, and the softness disappears. My body tenses.

We’re sitting in a new room.
